Fraser Creek

Walnut River Tables

When this client approached me to design a dining table and console table for their mountain cabin, their main objective was to “soften” the feel of the room. The cabin is log construction and the floor is slate, with a stone fireplace in the main living space. Everything about the room felt cold and hard, so the challenge in this space was to update the feel of mountain cabin architecture, while avoiding modern furniture design that would feel totally out of place in the setting.

The concept of using the blue glass to create a “river” between two walnut live-edge slabs was the perfect solution. This “Fraser Creek” design created an organic element that feels natural in the mountain setting without being rustic, and the round shape of the dining table softens the otherwise hard and angular room.

The client gravitated toward Mid-Century Modern style, but I ended up drawing on Danish Modern design elements for the bases of these tables. I made the legs more substantial than what would be traditionally seen in that style in order to balance the visual weight of the table tops, and hand-cut a wide chamfer on the underside of the tops to keep them from being visually unbalanced.

The final touch on the design was to “suspend” the tops above the base, adding visual depth below the glass and giving a visual “lift” to the dining table. The urban-milled walnut slabs used for these tables have exceptionally beautiful color, and were locally harvested from trees just down the road from my shop. The blue glass was hand-cut in Fort Collins, CO by Black’s Glass.
